A former champion in AEW has looked back on a match where he was extremely concerned for Sting’s welfare.
At Forbidden Door 2023, The Icon, Darby Allin and Tetsuya Naito faced off against the trio of Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara and Minoru Suzuki. One spot in the match that did not go as planned took place on the outside. With The Icon lying on a table, Guevara dived off the top rope and crashed into the former World Champion after performing a 630. The original plan was for the Hall of Famer to move out of the way and avoid the impact. After Guevara connected with the move, he admitted he had concerns.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Sammy Guevara revealed his initial reaction when he connected with the dive to the outside:
So, the story about that [630 onto Sting at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door II]. He was supposed to move. But for whatever reason, either the 630 is too fast or timing, whatever, I landed off. And I remember going through the table, and I feel his body on my back. And I’m thinking, oh, I just killed Sting. I land, kind of roll off and look at him. And then he pops up like a minute later and finishes the match because he’s such a pro.
Guevara continued, stating that the former World Champion apologised for no-selling the move, something that the former TNT Champion understandably had no issues with:
But I remember for a minute, I was like, oh no. He took complete total blame for it. He was like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t move,’ whatever. I’m just happy he’s okay. He’s like, ‘Sorry, I no-sold your move.’ And I’m like, ‘Bro, you’re good. I’m just happy you’re alive.’
