AEW Star Pulled From Independent Show Amidst Departure Rumours

A former champion in AEW will not be appearing at an upcoming independent show following rumours that they are set to exit the company imminently.

On September 27th, New Era Wrestling will present The Final Battle in El Paso, Texas. One of the matches announced for the event saw Light Heavyweight Champion Dastan put the title on the line against Arez and AEW star Rey Fenix. However, in a statement posted to the promotion’s Facebook page, Fenix will not be competing:

Rey Fenix will be unable to participate in our lucha libre event on September 27th due to personal circumstances. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause as it is beyond our control. However, we remain committed to delivering the finest lucha libre experience in El Paso, we assure you of this promise.

No replacement for Fenix has been announced at this time.

The update from New Era Wrestling comes just a few days after news broke that Fenix and his brother Penta EL Zero Miedo are both looking to depart AEW when their contract comes to an end and that there is significant interest from WWE. While the exact date of Fenix’s contract expiration is to be confirmed, it is known to be sometime this year. It should be noted that while The Lucha Bros both signed with AEW at the same time in 2019 and Penta’s contract is set to expire in the summer, Fenix likely has injury time added on.

AEW Stars Engage In Talks With WWE

Not shy about looking to leave All Elite Wrestling, a follow-up report stated that The Lucha Bros had been in talks with WWE while still under contract. The report also noted the nature of the talks with details including that they would be a package deal and did not want to start in developmental promotion NXT.

In a new update, another AEW star looks set to join WWE soon.

As the rumoured signing draws closer, Booker T has stated that he wants to see the tag team skip NXT.
