While Thunder Rosa might be out injured, it appears that she won’t be short on challengers when she gets back in the ring.
Tay Melo, formerly Tay Coni, recently took some time off along with Sammy Guevara for the couple’s wedding on August 7th. The newlyweds were joined by Tony Khan and a number of other wrestling personalities for the ceremony at Luxmore Grande Estate in Winter Springs, Florida.
Interestingly, when she returned to action, she did so under a new ring-name. The name change caught many fans by surprise as the new moniker didn’t reference her new married name, so appeared a little out of the blue. However, her previous “Conti” surname came from an earlier marriage to Judoka, Jorge Conti.
Her new Tay Melo name refers to her family name of Melo de Carvalho.
Speaking in a new interview with Denise Salcedo, Melo discussed the thought process behind the change, revealing that she never legally changed her name upon getting married to Conti.
“Short term I just changed my last, which is like a restart for me. Everybody knows that was my ex’s last name. I got married but I never really had a wedding. I never had a wedding. I had pictures in Brazil because I was modelling. So I just took some pictures back in Brazil with my ex because the model that I was supposed to do the photoshoot with got sick.
I have never had a wedding before… I never changed my name legally, I just put his name on my work name, so I was like ‘well it doesn’t make sense to have his name, I gotta change it,’ so I put my real last name.”
Looking to her in-ring future, Melo explained that she has her sights set on matches with Toni Storm, Britt Baker and Thunder Rosa.
AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa has emerged as one of the more controversial figures in the company in recent days. Although currently nursing a back injury there have also been numerous reports about her backstage status. It has been claimed that the star has significant heat with Britt Baker, while she is also not on good terms with Jamie Hayter after breaking her nose during a recent match.
After Rosa announced that she wouldn’t be wrestling at All Out it was even rumoured that she had been suspended, but this was quickly dismissed.
As far as Melo is concerned, she’s focused on rebranding herself and getting back in the title picture.
“My short term goal right now is putting my new name out there and trying to rebrand myself. I want to go back of course for the main title picture, but more than that I want to keep learning and growing. Keep working with people that bring so much to the table. I wanna work with Toni Storm, I wanna work Shida again, I wanna work Thunder Rosa, I wanna work Britt again, Britt was one of my favourite matches, she brings so much when she’s on the mic. She’s a beast on the mic. I wanna learn, I think that’s my main goal all the time. I want to do my best and keep growing.”
Tay Melo was most recently in action on the August 26th episode of Dynamite where she teamed with new husband Sammy Guevara to defeat Ruby Soho and Ortiz.
