AEW Star Kenny Omega Teases Massive Return Match With Former Rival

Kenny Omega has hinted at what his first match back could be when he is cleared to compete.

The former AEW World Champion is closing in on one year out of action as he was rushed to the hospital in late 2023 after suffering diverticulitis. Making a one-off appearance in May 2024, Omega once again came face to face with Kazuchika Okada before being attacked by The Young Bucks.

Having unfinished business with his fellow AEW EVPs, many have anticipated that Omega’s return match will see him face off against the Tag Team Champions. Following a recent interview, it appears that The Cleaner has found himself a partner.

Kenny Omega Reunites With Hiroshi Tanahashi

In a new interview set up by New Japan, Omega met with the promotion’s President and former rival Hiroshi Tanahashi. First looking back at their rivalry and their match at Wrestle Kingdom 13, Omega discussed his return match and how he would want to team with The Ace:

‘First priority is making my return. But if I can come back, I do want to face the Bucks. I want revenge, but more importantly, I want to do it the right way. The first time Tanahashi and I wrestled, it was for the belt, and then in 2019 it was a lot on the line for the both of us.

Now, with the two of us aligned, next time we wrestle, I’d want to do it together. I’ve been a bad guy for a lot of my time, especially in AEW. I cheated to win the AEW title. I don’t want that to be the memory of myself that stays with young fans. If Tanahashi and I meet in that ring again, I’d want to do it as his partner.’

Tanahashi also has unfinished business with The Young Bucks as The Ace and The Acclaimed lost to The Bucks and Okada at Forbidden Door 2024. The conversation concluded by promoting the upcoming Wrestle Dynasty show on January 5th 2025, which will see stars from New Japan, AEW, and ROH all compete, which may be the location of the tag match.

Kenny Omega has been recently spotted training for an in-ring return with a former NJPW star.

Ahead of Wrestle Dynasty, The Young Bucks made an announcement.
