One-half of a top AEW tag team has hit back at fans over a common complaint.
While multiple eras of professional wrestling have seen tag teams featured prominently and go on to have all-time great feuds, more recent years have seen the division be more of an afterthought, especially during the latter years of Vince McMahon being in charge of creative. Despite there being hope at the time with the classic matches between The New Day and The Usos, seeing Braun Strowman win the titles with a 10-year-old child was not the division’s finest hour.
Following the creation of AEW, many found that the promotion looked to counter this by giving a greater focus on tag teams, shining the spotlight on teams such as The Lucha Bros, The Acclaimed and Proud and Powerful. Following on from the purchase of Ring of Honor, The Briscoes’ talent was also rightfully showcased in their battles with FTR.
Taking to social media to defend tag team wrestling, Dax Harwood of FTR responded to a common fan complaint that certain singles stars shouldn’t be in teams and gave multiple examples of the biggest stars in the industry:
Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen people tweet, “*insert name* should be in a singles match!” or “why are they wasting *insert name* in a tag team?!” Yall, tag team wrestling IS a draw, & has been for MANY years. Just because one person held a monopoly over wrestling & didn’t care for tag teams, doesn’t mean it’s a step down! Rock & Roll Express, Road Warriors, Midnight Express, Arn & Tully, New Age Outlaws, etc., all drew BIG money!
Tag Team Wrestling CAN be the main event; patting us on the back, I feel we’ve proven that a couple of times. Now that my crybaby soapbox rant is over, tag some of your favorite UNSIGNED tag teams!
Triple H echoed this sentiment, booking Sami Zayn and Kevin Owen’s tag team triumph over The Usos as the Saturday main event of WrestleMania 39. This was the first time that the tag titles were ever defended in the main event of The Show of Shows.
