AEW has announced the signing of Satnam Singh, the first-ever NBA-drafted player to come from India.
The 7’3″ giant was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks back in 2015 and played for their affiliate, the Texas Legends. In 2016, Singh was the star of a Netflix documentary, ‘One in a Billion’ which followed his journey from a rural farming village in India to being drafted by the NBA.
This will not be the first time Singh has entered the squared circle. Back in 2017, he visited the WWE Performance Centre and practiced some drills in the ring. However, the Indian star ultimately chose not to sign with the company.
Now, Singh has decided the time is right to make the leap from basketball hoops to the wrestling ring and will begin training at Cody Rhodes and QT Marshall’s Nightmare Factory.
AEW CEO Tony Khan said that he was impressed by the athleticism and charisma, and is excited to add him to the roster.
“While we’ve recently secured some of the hottest free agents on the planet, I’m also deeply committed to cultivating our own homegrown stars and the next generation of extraordinary professional wrestlers, In addition to Satnam’s commanding 7’3” stature, I was impressed with his high level of athleticism and charisma. He’s an exciting addition to our roster, and I’m looking forward to our fans getting to know Satnam’s personality and watching his development.”
Singh will not be the first NBA star to appear in AEW. The legendary Shaquille O’Neal teamed with Jade Cargill to take on Cody Rhodes and Jade Cargill back in March. Things did not end well for the star as Rhodes drove him through a table at ringside. However, his team still won the match as Cargill pinned Velvet Sky for the victory.
