One of AEW’s newest stars, Athena, has revealed why she initially hesitated to sign with the company, saying she considered quitting pro wrestling altogether.
Formerly known as Ember Moon in WWE, Athena was released from her contract on November 4th, 2021 after six years with the company.
Six months later, she made her AEW debut at Double or Nothing, heading straight into a confrontation with TBS Champion Jade Cargill.
Many fans have wondered why it took so long for the star to become All Elite as the promotion seemed like the perfect fit for the former NXT Women’s Champion. Now, during an appearance on NBC ‘Sports Boston’ she has revealed that when she left WWE wasn’t sure if she even wanted to continue wrestling.
“It was like a six-month, ‘Ah, are we interested? Are you interested?’ Because I think, when I left, I didn’t know if I wanted to continue wrestling, I just knew that I loved watching the AEW product at home.”
However, after a few appearances on the independent scene, everything finally came together for the two sides.
“I had a couple matches on the indies and those blew up – Shane Strickland, Taya Valkyrie, Mia Yim, and it just kept getting more and more traction. I think like, we finally just kind of hit the double tap on the phone call and it was like, ‘Yeah, let’s figure out something. Let’s do this.’”
Athena has yet to clash with Jade Cargill, this has resulted in war of words between the two women on social media with The Fallen Goddess trying to goad Cargill into putting her title on the line.
No, all this sounds like is that you don’t have a comeback. Maybe your friend will fill in for you again?
Put in them “dues” and I’ll think about it. 💅🏾😎 this is MY show. You and alien lady turned “woman” go have a seat. I’ll call you when I want you. https://t.co/pzQqQM5GGj
