Following the tragic and seemingly very sudden passing of AEW star Brodie Lee at the age of 41,Fightful‘s Sean Ross Sapp reports that the AEW roster knew of Lee’s illness, but kept it private out of respect for Lee.
While the passing of Brodie Lee, real name Huber, seemed sudden to wrestling fans across the globe, that detail in itself is a tribute to the respect the man commanded among his peers – with a statement from the former TNT Champion’s wife confirming the cause of death to those not in the know as a non Covid-related lung issue.
Huber last wrestled for AEW on the October 7th episode of AEW Dynamite, losing the TNT Championship to Cody Rhodes. His final wrestling appearance was on the October 12th episode of Being The Elite. Lee would speak on the AEW Unrestricted podcast which was released in late October.
While Lee was reportedly out of action with an “undisclosed injury”, Tony Khan would respond to a question about Brodie Lee on a media call in early December.
“Yeah, well, I can’t comment on him not being here but he’s one of our top wrestlers and, you know, we’ll be excited to have him with us soon…I hope.”
Fightful have reported that after speaking with members of the All Elite Wrestling roster and staff, many of them were informed of Brodie Lee’s illness and the severity long ago, as far back as early November. However, the report states that those who knew were asked to respect the privacy of the family as Lee battled the illness, and did so until his passing.
Tributes have come pouring in from around the wrestling world following Brodie Lee’s passing. We have collated several of the tributes posted by wrestlers from WWE, AEW and beyond here.
Everyone at Inside The Ropes is heartbroken to learn of Jon Huber’s passing, and we send our condolences to all of his friends, family and fans at this time.
