AEW are reportedly interested in bringing in former WWE Superstar Buddy Murphy.

The Australian star signed with WWE back in March 2013. After winning the NXT Tag Team Titles alongside Wesley Blake, Murphy starred on the fledgling 205 Live brand. During this time he feuded over the Cruiserweight Championship with Mustafa Ali. Murphy finally won the cruiserweight crown at Super-Showdown in Melbourne, Australia.

After losing the title, Murphy arrived on the main roster, first on SmackDown and then on Monday Night RAW. It was on RAW that he entered into a storyline with Seth Rollins and the Mysterio family. The story later centred around Rey Mysterio’s daughter Aalyah taking a romantic interest in the star.

After a somewhat awkward on-screen kiss between the two, something Murphy later admitted made him uncomfortable, the storyline was dropped and the Aussie disappeared from television.

Murphy briefly returned to SmackDown in March of this year, with his final WWE appearance coming on ‘WrestleMania SmackDown’ in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

At time of writing Murphy is yet to sign with his next destination, but a new report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter suggests that both AEW and IMPACT are interested in his services.

Following his release, Murphy took to social media to show off his incredible body transformation as he waits for his non-compete clause to wind down.

The news of AEW’s interest comes after Aleister Black, now Malakai Black, who was released at the same time as Murphy, readies himself for his AEW in-ring debut. It has been announced that Black will take on Cody Rhodes on August 4th.

Meanwhile, Braun Strowman who also left WWE on June 2nd, could be in line for a shock return to the company. A new report has suggested that there is interest within WWE in brining back the former Universal Champion.
