According to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, AEW have plans to exhibit Sting as an active performer.
Following the return of ‘The Icon’ on the December 2 AEW Dynamite: Winter is Coming, it was widely speculated that the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion would serve only in a non-active role. This was thought to be untrue however, when it was revealed that the legend has signed a full-time, multi-year contract.
AEW soon pushed forth their intention to use the star as a regular character on weekly television and belief that he would step back into the squared circle in an active capacity was furthered when the promotion released a graphic for Stinger that had record attached to it.
Now, Barrasso notes that there are plans for the master of the Scorpion Deathlock to return as an active wrestler with the likelihood that he will compete in tag team and cinematic outings where his mobility and input can be micro-managed only to what he can handle.
As per the report, Sting and AEW President Tony Khan will have a collaborative partnership in order that the superstar has say in everything that occurs around his character and is highly impressed with how professional the company has been with compensation and long-term planning.
In the years following his suspected retirement, Sting has often cited that he has one more great match left in him and that he yearns for that final bout to put the full-stop on his career. This comes despite suffering from spinal stenosis which occurred during a bout with Seth Rollins at WWE Night of Champions 2015.
