One of AEW’s original hires has revealed that they almost had a very different career in the promotion, following an idea to change their name in the early days of the company.
Penelope Ford and Kip Sabian, a duo who have been with All Elite Wrestling since 2019, recently sat down for a virtual signing session with Captain’s Corner. The pair couldn’t quite recall how they first became a team on television, but Ford mentioned that AEW had initially wanted to change her name.
“It was us, I think (who pitched being together on AEW TV), was the original, right? Did we pitch that? I can’t remember. I think we did. Did we pitch it? I honestly can’t remember,” Sabian said.
Ford added, “No, they wanted to change my name.” Sabian then remembered, “Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.” Ford mentioned that the change in her name led to a storyline for the duo.
Sabian And Ford Open To Rivalry With AEW Couple
When it comes to future on-screen collaborations, both Sabian and Ford are open to feuding with another of AEW’s real-life couples Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo, who have also been paired together onscreen. Sabian jokingly said that Melo and Guevara are currently doing the same characters that he and Ford were prior to Sabian’s injury.
“Of course (we’d be open to feuding with Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo),” Sabian said. Ford added, “We’re always in a feud with them (she laughed).” Sabian continued, “Why wouldn’t we? I mean, let’s get down to brass tacks here, let’s be brutally honest. They are basically doing characters that we did prior to my injury. Let’s be serious.”
Sabian wrapped up a program with Orange Cassidy over the All-Atlantic Title earlier this month, while Ford has not wrestled in a sanctioned match since October.
