AEW Original Discusses Retirement; Looks Forward To A Sting-like Farewell

Sting with Garrett and Steven Borden at AEW Revolution

This AEW original has opened up on receiving a farewell similar to Sting.

Last year at AEW Revolution 2024, WWE Hall of Famer Sting wrestled his last wrestling match, where he defended the Tag-team championships alongside Darby Allin against The Young Bucks. In a career spanning over three decades, Sting was regarded as one of the best pro-wrestlers of all time and received a well-deserved farewell.

At 56 years old, AEW original Dustin Rhodes is drifting toward the dusk of his career. Past his prime, Rhodes can still perform better than several young talents in the industry. However, not on the positive side of his age, Rhodes recently appeared in an interview with Renee Paquette on Close-Up, ahead of his Double or Nothing 2025 bout.

Discussing his retirement plans, Rhodes said,

“I’ve thought in depth, and there’s a list of three guys. I’d rather not say them right now. I want to keep that close to my chest, but I do have a plan. It’s not soon, guys. I know I’ve said I have one more year sometimes in the past, and it always changes. Then the next year I’ll say, ‘Oh, I got a couple more years,’ and the next two years come, and, ‘Oh, maybe next year.’ Seriously, it’s not very close, but it is.

I would say a couple of years, two and a half, maybe. I do have a plan of who I want to work, who I want to face, and I think Tony’s going to be okay with that.”

The current ROH World Tag Team Champion further claimed that he believes Tony Khan might give him a farewell similar to Sting.

“I think he’s going to give me the opportunity to go out like Sting did and that is the most respect that I could ever feel. Feel the most love, the most passion from this company, and I feel it every single day. With all the tribalism out there about the other place and us and what’s good, what’s bad, whatever, they have no idea how hard we work and what goes on. I mean, we’re our startup company. This is our sixth year. We are growing every single year, doing amazing, making huge amounts of money, and working all over the world. It is a place I want to be and finish my career.”

A pro-wrestling veteran and in the industry for three decades himself, Rhodes is now scheduled to tag alongside Sammy Guevara and face The Hurt Syndicate for the AEW World Tag-Team Championship on 25th May, 2025 at Double or Nothing.

AEW Star Dustin Rhodes Reveals Why He Will Never Wrestle His Brother Cody Rhodes Again

Earlier this year, Dustin Rhodes shared a post on social media praising his younger brother Cody Rhodes, before explaining why he might never wrestle him again.

“I get asked daily about how I feel about Cody’s success. I love it and I am super proud. Proud of him, proud of my dad, proud of our family. We all 3 have different styles that stand us out and Cody has definitely surpassed every expectation of him. We are all different in many ways and each of us have left its mark on the world of pro wrestling and entertainment and that #RhodesTrain ain’t stopping. #RhodesFam

“No. I will never fight him again. I wouldn’t dare touch something so magical.”

In other news: Dustin Rhodes is now 17 years sober.
