The team behind AEW’s social media accounts might have dropped themselves in hot water after mistaking Johnny Elite for Johnny Gargano.
On the May 18th episode of AEW Dynamite dubbed ‘Wildcard Wednesday,’ Samoa Joe was scheduled to face the ‘Joker’ entrant in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
As it transpired, fans weren’t kept waiting long as that match-up was the first on the show. With Samoa Joe waiting in the ring, his mystery opponent was revealed to be the former John Morrison, performing under the name Johnny Elite.
In the lead up to the show, fans had been trying to predict who would show up, with some mentioning the name of Johnny Gargano. The star has been a free agent since leaving WWE in December 2021. Tommaso Ciampa even trolled fans earlier that day, sharing a picture of himself with Gargano and his wife Candice LeRae, writing that he was “hanging out with a couple of jokers.”
In a someone unfortunate moment, and perhaps showing their wishful thinking, as Johnny Elite made his way to the ring, AEW’s social media team announced that “Johnny Gargano is HERE.” Even tagging the star’s official account in the process.

In the ring, despite pushing Joe all of the way, Johnny Elite was eventually dispatched with a Muscle Buster.
The former John Morrison was released by WWE back in November 2021. The star had returned to the company in January 2020 re-joining his former partner The Miz.
After leaving WWE, the high-flyer headed back to the independent scene where he appeared at Triplemania XXX as well as in GCW.
In the women’s tournament, the ‘Joker’ was revealed to be Maki Itoh, the Japanese star making her first appearance with the company since March 2021. Itoh also came up short, submitting to Britt Baker in the Lock Jaw. Baker will now face Toni Storm in the semi-finals.
