It was AEW Dynamite featuring the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament finals with Bryan Danielson vs. “Hangman” Adam Page and Mariah May facing Willow Nightingale in the women’s finals.
This episode took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. The announcers were Excalibur, Nigel McGuinness, and Tony Schiavone.
Will Ospreay, the AEW International Champion, talked about Maxwell Jacob Friedman turning on Daniel Garcia last week. Ospreay claimed he was more talented than MJF yet some people still want to cheer for MJF because he is their scumbag. Ospreay challenged MJF for a fight. MJF appeared seated on a chair somewhere. MJF called Ospreay a joke while calling him a dancing toy monkey and the fans will grow tired of it. MJF said he’ll expose anybody that gets in the ring with him. MJF challenged Ospreay for the AEW International Title on Dynamite next week. The video ended. Ospreay: “Max, I’ll see you next week, you little bitch.” It’s on for next week.
Match #1: Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Finals: Bryan Danielson defeated “Hangman” Adam Page by pinfall. Referee Paul Turner was knocked down by a Busaiko Knee by Danielson. That meant that Jeff Jarrett went from being a Special Enforcer at ringside to taking over as the referee of the match. In the final moments of the match, Page had Bryan grounded in a Crossface submission. This led to Bryan countering with a pin attempt where he had Page hooked tightly and Jarrett counted to three to give Bryan the victory. It went over 20 minutes.
That win by Danielson means he won the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament and Danielson will challenge Swerve Strickland for the AEW World Title at AEW All In London on August 25th. Swerve Strickland walked out with the AEW World Title and stared at Danielson.
The AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland did a promo about how he’s going to be on Team AEW for the Blood & Guts match on July 24th. Swerve also challenged AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada to a match next week.
Match #2: Stampede Street Fight: Chris Jericho (w/Bryan Keith) defeated Samoa Joe. The action spilled backstage where Big Bill helped Jericho by hitting Joe with a steel chair to the back. Bill gave Joe a Chokeslam onto a wooden palette connected to a forklift. Jericho drove the forklift through what looked like a temporary wall. It was announced by Justin Roberts that the doctor had stopped this match and Jericho has won this match.
After a break, Samoa Joe was put on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance. The camera panned over to show Jericho, Big Bill and Bryan Keith. Jericho waved bye to Joe.
Match #3: Pac defeated Claudio Castagnoli, Kyle Fletcher & Tomohiro Ishii by submission. Pac hit the Black Arrow off the top on Fletcher. Pac applied the Brutalizer on Fletcher for the submission win. The win means that Pac has earned a shot at the AEW International Championship.
They showed “Hangman” Adam Page walking backstage with Renee Young trying to talk to him. Page told The Young Bucks and Okada that “I’ll do it.” That was Hangman’s way of saying he’ll be in the Blood & Guts Match with The Elite in two weeks. It was confirmed later in the show.
Mercedes Mone did an in-ring promo as the TBS Champion and NJPW Strong Women’s Champion. Mone said that there would be no interruptions. Mone said that she was the best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be. That drew boos since it was the Bret Hart line. Mone called out Britt Baker saying she would leave her for dead if she got in Mone’s way. Mone poured a shot of booze for a toast for herself. Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. interrupted the promo. Britt nailed a dude with a forearm and hit another dude with a superkick. Baker went into the ring, so Mone left through the crowd. Baker didn’t say a word as the segment ended.
Darby Allin was shown backstage beating up Brandon Cutler. Allin called out The Elite for Dynamite next week.
Match #4: Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Finals: Mariah May defeated Willow Nightingale by pinfall. The finish saw May counter a Willow lifting move and May rolled forward with a victory roll while sitting on top of Willow for the pinfall win.
After the match, Mariah May grabbed the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Title belt and attacked her mentor Toni Storm, the AEW Women’s Champion, with it. May also attacked Storm’s ally Luther with the title belt as well. Storm’s attack led to Luther bumping off the ramp and through a table. As for Storm, she was a bloody mess due to the attack. May even rubbed some of Storm’s blood on the side of May’s face for good measure. May stood tall to end the show at 10:03 p.m. so it was only three minutes after the top of the hour when Dynamite ended.
