AEW Dynamite Match Awarded 5 Stars

AEW Dynamite set

The March 22nd episode of AEW Dynamite was headlined by the much-hyped “dream match” between Kenny Omega and El Hijo del Vikingo.

The match was originally scheduled to take place in AAA at the tail end of 2021 but ended up being scrapped. After losing the AEW World Championship at Full Gear that November, Omega announced that he would be taking some time off to deal with a number of nagging injuries. The star wouldn’t return until August of the following year.

25-year-old Mexican star Vikingo is widely regarded as one of the most exciting in the world, so naturally, a rare match for a major American promotion was eagerly anticipated.

In the end, it was Omega who scored the win, but not before Vikingo wowed the crowd with his high-octane and high-flying offence. This included driving Omega through a table at ringside with an insane Springboard 630 Splash.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer awarded the match five stars. The match was the 22nd of Omega’s career to earn that rating or higher, and the third AEW match of the year to be given the accolade.

“Notes from the 3/22 tapings in Independence, MO. This was the taping build around Kenny Omega vs. El Hijo del Vikingo, who had a ***** match and one of the best television matches in the history of the company and the single most spectacular television match.”

AEW Stars To Leave The Company?

Elsewhere on the show, FTR confronted World Tag Team Champions The Gunns. After some back and forth a title match was finally made with a huge stipulation. If FTR lose, they will be forced to leave AEW.

There were also hints that the Young Bucks could also be written off television after being attacked in the parking lot. Interestingly, later in the show, Don Callis said that the Jackson brothers will be fine in a “few months” teasing they could be set for a spell on the sidelines.
