Adam Copeland has addressed a controversial segment he took part in while part of WWE.
Then known as Edge, Copeland captured the WWE Championship for the first time in 2006 when he cashed in his Money In The Bank contract against John Cena at New Year’s Revolution.
The following night on Raw, Copeland lived up to his Rated-R Superstar moniker by taking part in a ‘live sex celebration’ with his on-screen girlfriend Lita in the middle of the ring. The segment has since gone down in infamy for pushing the envelope a bit too far.
During an appearance on Chek Media, Copeland discussed how things have changed in pro wrestling over the past few decades, and when that segment was brought up, admitted it was something he would say “no” to now.
“Well Adam Copeland now would say no to that. But Adam Copeland then was like, ‘I guess this is part of the gig, this is what I got to do.’ Knowing even at the time, even with time differences or anything like that, it’s like, ‘Well, this sucks,’ and it did. It really did.
Now I have the confidence in myself, confidence as a performer. To know ‘nah I don’t gotta do that. I bring more than that to the table.’ I can do more with my eyes. than I can with trying cheap stuff like that. So that’s nice that the industry has grown from that because yeah, it’s easy to go for low-hanging fruit.
I think that’s one thing that wrestling did a lot of, and thankfully I think has learned its lesson. I think as society has progressed, as everyone has just kind of progressed and moved forward. I think thankfully, it has too, which wasn’t always the case. It could kind of be the outlier who was left lagging behind, but I feel like now it’s different, and in a good way.”
When the topic turned to the advice he would give to a performer in a similar situation now, Copeland said it’s all about doing what you’re comfortable with.
“Well, I think you just gotta [know] what are you comfortable with. Not only what are you comfortable with but what are you comfortable with living possibly forever? That’s a big decision to make now, right? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with, no matter what your age, going ‘Nah I think I’m good.’ The power of no, is a beautiful thing.”
Adam Copeland Explains Recent AEW Promo
On April 1st, an explosive interview dropped with CM Punk speaking out about his altercation with Jack Perry as well as criticising AEW’s management under Tony Khan. Seemingly in response, Copeland opened the following episode of Dynamite with a positive message for the company and telling fans to ignore “negative BS.”
Adam Copeland has explained his motivation for the Dynamite promo, saying he saw clips of the interview and simply wanted to give the locker room a “good message” in the aftermath.
In a new interview, Adam Copeland gave the timeframe for his retirement.
