The immediate future of Adam Cole has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, with his contractual situation with WWE far from certain.
It was initially reported that Cole’s existing contract with WWE expired in July following The Great American Bash. In the weeks that followed the former NXT Champion agreed on an extension with the company that would take him through NXT TakeOver: 36. It was noted that this was so that he could put over Kyle O’Reilly in the final instalment of their trilogy of grudge matches.
After the event, where Adam Cole did indeed lose to O’Reilly, speculation increased suggesting that he was now a free agent. Immediately after the show it was reported that Cole had yet to sign a new deal with WWE, but it was unclear whether his short term deal from July had expired.
Many fans wondered whether this would leave Cole free to appear on the upcoming episodes of AEW Dynamite or Rampage as Malakai Black did only a few weeks ago. In addition, Cole’s partner Britt Baker is currently AEW Women’s World Champion, while he also enjoys a strong relationship with The Elite.
However, a new report from Fightful Select as appeared to put pay to the idea that an AEW debut is imminent. The report notes that the short-term extension which Cole signed in July, runs until Friday, August 27th. With Dynamite and Rampage both being taped on the 25th, this would make it “impossible for him to legally appear.”
Fightful add that WWE sources have told them that they expect another offer from the company to be made to Cole this week.
Prior to TakeOver on August 6th, Cole met with Vince McMahon for what was described as a “high level meeting.” It later emerged that the meeting went well and Cole was wanted by both RAW and SmackDown.
Adam Cole signed for WWE in 2017, joining NXT alongside Kyle O’Reilly and the now released Bobby Fish. The trio dubbed ‘The Undisputed Era’ quickly set about dominating the black and gold brand. The group won the NXT Tag Team Titles on three occasions while Cole also captured the North American and NXT Championships. Cole still holds the record as the longest reigning NXT Champion in history with a reign spanning over 400 days.
