Adam Cole has admitted that he would love his former NXT rival Johnny Gargano to join him in AEW.
Johnny Gargano is currently one of the most in-demand free agents in the world.
On December 7th, Gargano stood in an NXT for what yet may turn out to be the final time. In an emotional promo, Gargano thanked fans for their support before saying goodbye to his home for the past six years. Although the farewell didn’t pass off without incident as Gargano was attacked and left laying by Grayson Waller.
Less than a handful of days later, Gargano’s WWE contract expired leaving him a free agent. The timing of the break couldn’t be better with Gargano’s wife Candice LeRae due to give birth in February.
Speaking in a new interview, Adam Cole has said that he would love his former NXT rival to join him in AEW. Appearing on the Throwing Down podcast with Renee Paquette and Miesha Tate, Cole said that Gargano is one of his favourite opponents ever.
“I will always mention Johnny Gargano as one of my favourite opponents of all time. We had a series of matches in NXT that, to this day, I’m incredibly proud of. Another fanatic human being, across the board. Johnny is a guy I would really love to see in AEW. Who knows as the wrestling landscape continues to change and evolve.”
Gargano and Cole enjoyed a memorable trilogy of matches in 2019 which saw the two men push each other to the very limit. The rivalry ensured that both men etched their name in NXT history, and will forever be linked with the black and gold faithful.
Cole revealed that he still keeps in touch with Gargano, although he hasn’t pressed him too much over his next career move.
“Me and Johnny chat, but more so about real-life stuff. I haven’t pressed him too hard about what he wants to do. He has a baby on the way, which is really exciting. I know he’s super focused on that, which is cool. I love Johnny to death. I think it would be amazing if he ended up in AEW.”
Interestingly, it has recently been reported that Johnny Gargano is “heavily considering” a move to AEW, so it appears that his former rival may just get his wish.
