Shawn Michaels has discussed his experiences in the Royal Rumble Match, revealing the bout is one of the more enjoyable moments of the year.
The WWE Hall of Famer appeared on a recent episode of the ‘Getting Over’ wrestling podcast and with the 2021 Royal Rumble fast approaching, the ‘Heartbreak Kid’ recalled his experiences in the match. Shawn admitted that this time of year can be a stressful period for a WWE performer, with WrestleMania season around the corner. However, the Rumble match can act as a moment of relief before the pressure begins:
“All the real hard work and pressure and anxiety, all of those things are going to mount up soon after this. But this match in and of itself, is actually, you know, sort of a blast to be in, and to be a part of. And so this to me, in a lot of ways is that last show where you can just go out there and really have a lot of fun, and enjoy the entire aspect of it.
Because I don’t think the Rumble is where you feel a great deal of pressure and anxiety. Because there’s just so much to it and so many different aspects to where you don’t feel like you’re carrying the weight of absolutely everything. As apposed to being one on one with somebody, and absolutely every eye 100% of the time is on you and your opponent.”
One of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of boots, Shawn Michaels is no stranger to the Royal Rumble. During his illustrious career, HBK has appeared in 12 Rumble bouts and is not only a two time winner, he is only one of two men to triumph from the number one position and the first man in history to do so.
His victory in 1996 would earn him a match with Bret Hart for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania XII. The resultant Iron Man match would become one of the all time greats, and is a bout that is still heralded as legendary by fans to this day.
Most famously, Michaels won the 1995 Royal Rumble from the premier position in a controversial ending that saw only one of Michaels’ feet touch the floor. Sneaking back in, HBK would eliminate The British Bulldog for the win.
Recalling his Royal Rumble legacy, Shawn hold his appearances in the matches alongside his legendary Ladder Match with Razor Ramon as the steps he needed to take to become one of WWE’s top Superstars:
“I think that was certainly one of the bigger building blocks. You know, I always sort of go back to that WrestleMania 10 ladder match which is where it put me on the map from a performance stand point to where people thought I might be able to a pretty ok main event performer at that point.
But the Rumble, and those appearances obviously then start setting you up for a very tip top main event, carrying the company type aspect.”
The 2021 Royal Rumble Event takes place Sunday, January 31st 2021. A full card run down can be found at the previous link and Inside the Ropes will have live coverage of the event.
