Another blockbuster week of wrestling is now firmly in the books, leaving our panel with an array of choice match ups form which to choose from.
This week we have ITRwrestling.com’s SEO & Social Media Manager Dean Puckering who, alongside our regular panel of Liam Wyatt, Gary Cassidy, Kenny McIntosh and Sondra Ruth, will be offering up his favourite match of the week.
The New Day vs Street Profits (WWE Survivor Series)
One of WWE’s traditional ‘big 5’ pay per views, Survivor Series, took place last week and yielded several nominations from our panel. This week’s guest panelist Dean Puckering was particularly taken by the battle for tag team supremacy between RAW tag champs the New Day and their smackdown equivalent, the Street Profits. “This match was an absolute masterclass in tag team wrestling, with the Street Profits getting a HUGE win over the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions of all-time” said Dean. “New Day entering with their Gears 5 attire was incredible but Montez Ford was particularly exceptional -he absolutely exudes star quality.”
Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre (WWE Survivor Series)
Sticking with Survivor Series and a stirring main event that attracted widespread plaudits. Brand champions McIntrye and Reigns did battle in what will surely be a recurring main event series between two of the company’s most bankable stars. Kenny McIntosh was bowled over, “Drew McIntyre vs Roman Reigns felt like a WrestleMania main event. From the build to the entrances to their epic clash at Survivor Series. Two stars who had been built to such a level it was hard to predict who would win.” He continues “Near falls, great selling and phenomenal psychology makes this one the easiest pick ever for Match of the week.”
Of a similar mindset was Gary Cassidy, albeit the decision was not quite so clear cut. “This might be the toughest week to make a selection so far, with even Survivor Series and the following RAW showcasing some incredible matches. For me, Drew McIntyre vs Roman Reigns is the standout. The bar had been set with two incredible matches on the same card, then we got a match that truly was ‘WrestleMania-calibre’ and much better than anyone expected!” Gary continues “I knew these two would bring the brutality, but the pacing, the technicality, and the actual booking of this match all ensured it was my pick of the week. The perfect balance between giving us an incredible match and still leaving us wanting more, without cheating us out of an actual conclusion. A colossal clash in every sense, and one completely befitting of the main event slot (in terms of matches) on Survivor Series.”
Go Shiozaki vs Katsuhiko Nakajima (Pro Wrestling NOAH – The Chronicle Vol. 4)
Over in Japan, there was another epic clash of heavyweights to enjoy, with former partners turned foes Shiozaki and Nakajima battles for the promotions top prize, the GHC Heavyweight Championship. Liam Wyatt was left in awe, “This may have been the most brutal encounter that I have ever witnessed. The story here was simple – great friends turned bitter enemies – and each man had a specific weapon of choice, Shiozaki with his chops and Nakajima with kicks.” Liam continues “What followed was one of the most robust strong style matches you’re ever likely to see, with two men trading blows in a violent rally until one could no longer stand. Sheer brutality on a cinematic scale.”
Io Shiari vs Rhea Ripley (WWE NXT)
Back with World Wrestling Entertainment, Wednesday’s NXT show once again highlighted it’s astonishing women’s division. The clash between current champion Shirai and former titlist Ripley was a typically brilliant affair and Sondra Ruth was not disappointed. “My favorite match this week was Rhea Ripley vs. Io Shirai. I had no doubt that it would be incredible, and it didn’t disappoint.” She continues “These are two absolute pros, and there was such an urgency to the match. It’s unfortunate that Rhea’s ear got so brutally hurt, but she looked like such a badass because of it. I was on the edge of my seat for every nearfall and didn’t want it to end; this was my favorite main event in a while.”
