Jake Roberts Says Legendary Tag Team Became “Sour” After Joining WWE

WWE Hall Of Famer Jake Roberts Explains Origins Of His Signature Promo Style

WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts has opened up about how his relationship with legendary tag team The Road Warriors shifted dramatically when they reunited in WWE in 1990.

Speaking on his podcast The Snake Pit, Roberts reflected on his early days with Hawk and Animal in Georgia Championship Wrestling in the early 1980s, describing their initial friendship as strong. But when the trio crossed paths again in WWE nearly a decade later, things weren’t the same.

“Oh, I was excited, and I was happy for them,” Roberts said of seeing the Road Warriors join WWE. “I hadn’t seen them in all of those years, but they had changed a lot. They got to thinking they were more than they were, and they just had an attitude about them, and it was sour, and it wasn’t right.”

According to Roberts, the shift in attitude made it clear that the bond they once shared had faded. When asked whether he ever considered trying to rebuild that friendship, Roberts didn’t hesitate in his response.

“I didn’t want any part of that; it wasn’t right for me, and it wouldn’t have been a good thing for me,” he said. “We both had changed; those guys had changed too, and it just wouldn’t have been a good fit.”

The Road Warriors were one of the most celebrated tag teams of the era, but Roberts’ comments paint a picture of the personal toll that success and time can take on relationships in the wrestling business.
