WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff has once again taken aim at AEW and its president Tony Khan, this time weighing in on the ongoing contract issues surrounding Rey Fenix.
Speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff claimed that Khan is holding Fenix back, comparing the situation to imprisonment.
Poor Fenix. He’s in ‘Kahn-tanamo Bay.’ He’s in prison and can’t go anywhere. Every time he tries, he’s gonna get his hand slapped.
Bischoff joked, making a play on words referencing Guantanamo Bay. The controversy stems from reports that Kahn added extra time to Fenix’s contract due to time missed for injuries. Fenix has reportedly expressed a desire to leave AEW and join WWE, but the added contractual time prevents him from doing so.
Fenix took to X to publicly criticise the promotion, accusing the company of ignoring his requests for medical treatment and describing their actions as “inhumane.” However, Fenix deleted the posts shortly thereafter. Some speculate that the posts were an attempt to get fired and bypass the company’s injury clause, accelerating his path to free agency, where he could reunite with his brother, Pentagon. Bischoff believes AEW told Fenix to delete his comments.
The fact that he had to take down his tweets tells me everything that I need to know. He’s got exposure, and this is gonna be a legal situation—it clearly is already—which means it’s only gonna get uglier.
With tensions rising and legal implications looming, the situation between Rey Fenix and AEW appears far from resolved.
What Does Eric Bischoff Think Tony Khan Should Do With Rey Fenix?
Eric Bischoff spoke about what he thinks Tony Khan should do with Rey Fenix and the conflict that has arisen over his contract and said that Khan should seriously consider cutting his losses with Fenix and granting him his release. Bischoff did agree that Khan should have added the extra time given the injury but also said that due to AEW having a vast number of talents it won’t be an issue to release unhappy talent.
